SIU Medicine's Sexual Health Clinic offers help
Sexual dysfunction and sexual health concerns affect a large number of people of all genders and identities. For example, 4 out of 10 women over the age of 18 have reported a sexual concern related to desire, arousal and orgasm. For many, these concerns and sexual dysfunction can be difficult to discuss.
SIU Medicine has created a new Sexual Pain Clinic as a safe space dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of sexual health problems. This clinic is an addition to SIU Medicine’s Sexual Health Clinic, which provides sexuality counseling. We believe it is important to improve not only our population's physical wellbeing but also our community members' mental wellbeing.
Common issues treated at Sexual Health Clinic
SIU Medicine's Sexual Health Clinic is located within the Women and Children's Clinic at 400 N. Ninth Street, Suite 3C.
Appointments can be made directly or through physician referral. The private one-on-one sessions last about 40 minutes.
This new clinic will offer expertise on a wide range of women's sexual pain conditions. These common conditions could include:
- Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
- Vaginismus (tightening of the pelvic floor muscles with attempted penetration)
- Vulvodynia (chronic vulvar pain)
- Vestibulodynia (chronic pain at the opening of the vagina)
- Clitorodynia (pain of the clitoris)
- Vulvar and vaginal atrophy (commonly due to menopause or hormone deficiency)
- Vulvar and vaginal skin disorders (ex. Lichen Sclerosus, Lichen Planus, Lichen Simplex Chronicus, etc.)
- Hypertonic pelvic floor musculature
- Vulvovaginitis (candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, genital herpes, contact dermatitis, etc.)
- Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause
- Pudendal Neuralgia
- Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder
- Cancer and Genito-pelvic Pain
