    About me

    Dr. Gabriel Uwaifo is a board-certified internist and endocrinologist with over three decades of clinical experience who completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He subsequently completed general medicine residency training at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria before completing an internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut. After serving as a chief resident at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Dr. Uwaifo completed a clinical and research endocrinology and diabetes fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He worked as a clinical and research endocrinologist with the MedStar Research Institute in Washington, DC. As a clinical endocrine attending at the Washington Hospital Center and the Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, before working in a similar capacity at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Prior to joining Ochsner, Dr. Uwaifo was based at LSU Health Sciences Center where he directed the medical weight management program while being a faculty member of the endocrinology division of the internal medicine department. Before joining SIU Medical School, he served 8 years as a clinical and research endocrinologist at Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, LA.

    He sees patients in the domains of endocrinology, diabetes, metabolism, clinical nutrition and medical weight management. He is board certified in Internal medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism as well as in Obesity medicine and medical bariatrics. In addition, he is a licensed clinical hypertension specialist.

    Dr. Uwaifo is an experienced clinical trialist and clinical researcher who has been involved in numerous seminal multicenter clinical research studies in the domains of Endocrinology, Diabetes and metabolism. He has authored > 100 peer-reviewed medical publications, book chapters and authored a medical textbook on the human hypothalamus. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the SIU School of Medicine, Department of Medicine.
    He is a member of several professional organizations including the American College of Physicians-Internal Medicine, the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association, the American Diabetes Association, the Endocrine Society, the American Society of Hypertension, the Obesity Society, the National Medical Association, the Royal Society of Medicine and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
