    About me

    L. Joy Houston served as an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before joining SIU Medicine. She also served as Program Director for the adult psychiatry residency program there and as Director of the Psychiatric Emergency Service. She completed her medical degree (2004) and residency in psychiatry (2008) at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS (2000).

    The Hattiesburg, MS, native is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is a member of numerous organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association, the Association for Academic Psychiatry, and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, where she currently holds a role on their Executive Council.  She has also served as a member of the Psychiatry Milestones 2.0 Work Group for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.  Houston’s educational interests include graduate medical education, curriculum development and evaluation, adult learning, and mentoring.
