School of Medicine commencement is May 21

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will celebrate its 48th Annual Commencement ceremony at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 21.

Medical students and graduate students will receive diplomas at the UIS Performing Arts Center, University of Illinois Springfield. The event will take place indoors at UIS for the first time since 2019.

SIU School of Medicine Dean and Provost Jerry Kruse, MD, MSPH, will award diplomas to the medical students, and SIU Systems Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Sheila Caldwell, EdD, will confer the degrees.

Regina Rabinovich, MD, MPH, is the guest commencement speaker. Rabinovich is the ExxonMobil Malaria Scholar in Residence at Harvard University, and director of the Malaria Elimination Initiative at ISGLOBAL at the University of Barcelona. She is also an SIU School of Medicine alumna (Class of ’82).

Additional honors presented include: the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Awards to Drs. Traves Crabtree, Stephen Goetter and Elizabeth Stewart; the Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence to Mikaela Thurber; and the Leonard Tow Humanism Awards.

NOTE: UIS charges a $5 parking fee (cash only) per vehicle for all events at the Performing Arts Center.
