Male Infertility

    Overview

Male infertility is a man's inability to cause pregnancy in a fertile female, commonly due to deficiency of sperm cells in the semen. Infertility is a common problem and affects one in every six couples who are trying to conceive. In at least half of all cases of infertility, a male factor is a major or contributing cause. Treatments may be available in the form of medication, hormone therapy, or surgery. SIU Medicine offers a comprehensive approach to male fertility treatment.

    When to seek care

In general, if a man has been trying with a female partner to conceive (engaging in unprotected vaginal intercourse) for a period of twelve months without success, a fertility evaluation may be considered. The time frame may change based on the age of the patients (both male and female) and whether the couple already has other biological children.

    Semen analysis

Semen analysis involves collecting a semen sample and evaluating it in a lab. The sample is looked at to determine the volume and quality of a man’s sperm. It is one of the first steps to detect male fertility issues. The test also shows whether a vasectomy was successful.
