Promoting growth through healthy eating
Through the partnership with the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), SIU Medicine will screen families who are food insecure. SIU Medicine hopes to improve food insecurity screening and family connections to food resources in the state of Illinois. Participants will work with their pediatrician, state food delivery services and other family support partners in the state.
Food insecurity
The state capital is one of the most at-risk places for food insecurity in southern Illinois and SIU Medicine is here to help. Food insecurity is the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, or the limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways. According to the USDA, up to 10.2 percent of U.S. households and 12.5 percent of households with children have limited or uncertain access to nutritionally healthy food.
In households with low food security, the hardships experienced are primarily reductions in dietary quality and variety. In households with very low food security, the hardships experienced are reduced food intake and skipped meals.

Programs
Food is medicine
Our providers believe that food is medicine. Nutrition is an integral part of helping people of all ages flourish and prevent diseases that threaten all of us.
Food is medicine is the belief that one should not have to face a dual crisis of illness and hunger. Without proper access to the needs of each person and taking into account their illness, allergies, medications and personal needs, providers will fail to create health in our community. By making nutrition a central part of health care doctors will be able to provide better health outcomes, lower the cost of care and improve patient satisfaction.
Patients we've helped
SIU Medicine's nutrition initiative has helped several families with food insecurity. Including, a parent of a child with hyperlipidemia who was struggling to lose weight because of the cost of food.
A single mother came to us after she couldn't afford her child's cardiac medicine and food for her four children under the age of five. "I wasn't sure if he would be OK without the medicine for few days since I needed to feed his siblings."
Another patient of child with a heart condition ran out of money for his child's formula, so they came to SIU Medicine for assistance.
