Sprains and Strains
Overview
Sprains and strains are two common types of soft tissue injury. A sprain is a stretching or tearing of ligaments, the tissue that connects two bones together in your joints. The most common location for a sprain is in your ankle. A strain is a stretching or tearing of muscle or tendon. A tendon is the tissue that connects muscles to bones. Symptoms of sprains and strains are pain, swelling, and bruising. Contact a physician if symptoms include numbness or an inability to move the affected area.
