Vascular Surgery

    Overview

Vascular surgery is a specialty in which diseases of the vascular system, or arteries and veins, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. It includes the sub-specialty, Endovascular Surgery, a less invasive procedure used in the treatment of certain conditions, such as aneurysms, that exist within blood vessels.

The SIU Medicine Division of Vascular Surgery includes four surgeons and two advanced practice nurse practitioners. They provide treatments for the full range of vascular diseases as well as dialysis access. A particular interest for our surgeons is limb preservation. Our providers work with patients to reduce the effects of peripheral vascular disease (PAD). PAD occurs when artery-blocking plaque builds up in blood vessels reducing the blood flow to legs and arms. If the disease progresses to it most severe form, patients are at risk of limb amputation. Medical treatment is always required and procedural treatment including minimally invasive procedures or surgery is sometimes needed. Our providers work closely with a patient's entire care team provide a continuum of care to minimize risk and preserve limb function.

As a teaching institution and clinical practice, SIU Medicine delivers an academic advantage in patient care. Our surgeons are continually teaching medical students and residents and are attuned to the latest developments in procedures and protocols. Our vascular surgeons have received specialized training and engage in clinical research to stay on the leading edge of surgical treatments and techniques.
