Sing by Heart

Harness the power of music.

Music is a powerful tool, especially for those with dementia. Songs that were a part of someone's formative years, even for those who are typically non-verbal, can often be a way to connect and communicate.

That's the power Sing by Heart taps into. A supportive and joyful musical experience for persons with dementia and their caregivers, the program promotes social connection, creative expression and improved quality of life. Thanks to the partnership with the Springfield Choral Society, Sing by Heart combines the professional musical talents with a program specifically designed for those with dementia.

For eight weeks, participants join a choir to sing familiar songs. For the final session, the choir will perform a short concert for family, friends, and the public. This program is not about hitting the perfect pitch, but rather engaging with patients and families to create a joyful experience.

Musically, the program is led by the director, Linda Younkin, and pianist, Bonnie Heinmiller Ettinger.

Who can participate?

Persons with memory loss are referred to Sing by Heart through the Smith Alzheimer's Center at SIU Medicine. Caregivers are required to attend this program with their loved one. Patients and caregivers can register for two different Smith Alzheimer's Center programs, which includes Sing by Heart.
