The events have always commemorated the life Dr. Kenniebrew, a groundbreaking central Illinois physician. This year we are also honoring the late Dr. Wesley Robinson-McNeese by renaming the medical conference the Kenniebrew-McNeese Conference.

The Citizens Club of Springfield’s January 26 public policy breakfast covered a subject close to home: the shortage of health care professionals and its current and future impact on Springfield. SIU School of Medicine Dean and Provost Dr. Jerry Kruse was the featured speaker and Dr. Stephen Stone , SIU Medicine professor emeritus, served as moderator. The discussion covered the types of medical positions most affected, factors contributing to the shortages, the impact on our region, and what was being done or can be done to address the issue.

The SIU Board of Trustees has voted to appoint Jerry Kruse, MD, MSPH, as Dean and Provost for Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The appointment is effective January 1 and is pending a final contract. Kruse, a professor of family medicine, has been Executive Associate Dean of SIU School of Medicine and Chief Executive Officer of SIU HealthCare since 2013. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin held a news conference with Illinois health care leaders Monday, May 22, to release his “Roadmap to Grow Illinois’ Rural Health Workforce.” The partnership with hospitals, community health centers, medical and nursing schools, community colleges, dentists, physicians, and nurses will organize efforts and provide new funding to address health care workforce shortages and staffing crises in rural Illinois.
